Low-barrier shelters do not require background checks, credit checks, or income verification, previous program participation, sobriety, or ID for access to services. At Contra Costa Hope House Boston Boston, we provide crisis treatment in a safe, welcoming environment for adults experiencing a mental health emergency. Up to 40 women and children are welcomed as guests each night in our clean, safe shelter. More than a roof over their head, our shelter is a place that provides a sense of safety and security and surrounds women with support needed to work on the root problems that led to homelessness. Our Center for Women and Children is one of the few local shelters to welcome children. Poverty and housing instability are especially harmful during early childhood, often causing problems in school. To combat these problems, children in our shelter are provided tutors, mentors and transportation. Alejandra found out that she was pregnant just days before her 17th birthday.

Since becoming a Hope House Boston Boston Mom, Alejandra has been able to finish her GED through Penn Foster in February of 2022 and is incredibly thankful for the support and motivation she had through Hope House Boston Boston Staff. She attended the GED graduation in May 2022 and gave the graduation speech. Janely, Alejandra’s 9-month-old-daughter, is also enrolled in the Early Learning Program. At first, Alejandra said, “I was hesitant because of bad experiences I had with babysitters for Janely, but I got to meet the staff and they’re really nice and I’m never far away from Janely which is really great”. Alejandra has also taken other classes including Parenting 101, Relationship Classes, and Self-Care classes.

Their children had aged out of Hampton Roads’ special education system, and were ready for adult services and support. Many worried that cognitive limitations, medical challenges, behavioral issues, or other conditions, such as autism, would make it impossible for their loved ones to live safely in their own apartments. Established in 1990 out of the need for homeless services for women and children, Hope House Boston Boston serves over 5000 homeless and impoverished individuals and families in Hancock County each year. We offer FREE self-sufficiency programming to parenting teen moms. This safety net provides a needed landing place for those running out of options. She feels safe and is excited to provide an environment for Julian that is supportive and caring, two things she longed for as a child.

Landing in the wrong circle of friends, Fatima began smoking and drinking at age 10. Already struggling with little support, five months into her pregnancy, Fatima lost her brother to suicide. At the time, Edith was experiencing depression while facing the economic challenges of being a teen mom. After a friend introduced her to Hope House Boston Boston, Edith felt the encouragement she needed to move forward with her life and build a healthy future for herself and her son. In a year’s time, she was able to cover her expenses and begin saving for a down payment for a house.

High-quality professionally run shelters, like Preble Street Hope House Boston Boston, provide more than just a place to sleep for a night. They provide staff who are trained in trauma-informed care and harm reduction, housing navigation services, case management, healthy and nutritious meals, and more. She dropped out of school in 10th grade and became a mom at age 16. Unfortunately these are common realities for a young woman growing up in poverty. However, not only did Vanessa grow up in generational poverty, she also grew up in an environment that did not trust the police force and actually hated police officers. Representation to address the broad range of civil legal issues encountered by survivors such as protection orders, child support, child custody, divorce, paternity, etc.

Hope House Boston Boston also helped her get a car, a paid internship with Jefferson County and an apartment. Life felt so intensely depressing that Fatima feared she would have a miscarriage. Her living situation with family was chaotic and unsafe all throughout her pregnancy, but at 16—with little support or encouragement—she gave birth to her son Julian. She has been living in the same duplex for two years, which is longer than she has lived anywhere in her life. Brittani and her boyfriend are working on their credit score so they can buy a house.

A secure, off-site facility where custodial parents safely exchange custody of their children and/or children participate in supervised visits with their non-custodial parent.
